Ring the Bell for Gender Equality

In celebration of International Women’s Day (8 March 2017), the Sustainable Stock Exchanges initiative is pleased to announce that 40 stock exchanges will host a bell ringing ceremony to raise awareness of the pivotal role the private sector can play in advancing gender equality to achieve the UN’s SDG 5.

2016 Global Dialogue

Ring the Bell for Gender Equality

SSE Leaders Luncheon: Climate

SSE Co-Hosts China Social Investment Forum

The United Nations Sustainable Stock Exchanges (SSE) initiative co-hosted the third annual China SIF (Social Investment Forum) taking place in China’s capital city Beijing on 10 November. The forum’s thematic focus this year was on green finance and sustainable stock exchanges, looking at how to reach a balance between exchange-led voluntary initiatives and compulsory requirements.

Regional Dialogue: Nordic Countries

Hosted by Nasdaq Helsinki, the SSE Regional Dialogue welcomed more than 100 participants from across Nordic markets. A high-level policy dialogue took place in the morning of 4 November, followed in the afternoon by practical workshops to assist investors, companies and other capital market stakeholders with integrating sustainable development into investment and business strategies. Workshops covered the topics of sustainable reporting, investor decarbonisation strategies, climate resilient markets and trade innovation.

Sustainable Development Goals

Regional Dialogue

South East Asia

Hosted by the Stock Exchange of Thailand and opened by Thai Minister of Finance H.E. Sommai Phasee, UNCTAD Secretary General Dr. Mukhisa Kituyi and UNEP Regional Director and Representative for Asia and the Pacific Mr. Kaveh Zahedi, the region’s first Regional Dialogue involved more than 150 participants from 13 countries. Additionally, the Regional Dialogue celebrated the joining of three new SSE Partner Exchanges: Hanoi, Hochiminh and Malaysia Stock Exchanges.

Gender Equality Bell Ringing

Stock exchanges from around the world joined UN Women, UN Global Compact and the Sustainable Stock Exchanges (SSE) Initiative to ring their opening or closing bells in support of gender equality and to highlight the pivotal role of the private sector in empowering women in the workplace, marketplace and community. Participating exchanges include the Bombay Stock Exchange, Borsa Istanbul, Egyptian Exchange, Nasdaq, Nigerian Stock Exchange, OMX Stockholm (part of Nasdaq group) and Warsaw Stock Exchange.

Latin America & Caribbean

Latin America’s four largest stock exchanges gathered in Colombia for the first Sustainable Stock Exchanges (SSE) Regional Dialogue: LatAm & Caribbean. The regional version of the flagship SSE Global Dialogue was facilitated by the SSE, hosted by the Colombian Securities Exchange (BVC), and sponsored by the Latin American Sustainable Investment Forum (LatinSIF).

2014 Global Dialogue

The SSE 2014 Global Dialogue was a 3.5 hour talk-show-style, high-level round-table designed to stimulate unscripted discussion among the speakers without presentations or speeches. The moderator, well-known business reporter of BBC News, Ms. Tanya Beckett, facilitated a fast-paced and interactive dialogue to a televised audience in Room XVIII of the Palais des Nations. Outcomes include new and renewed commitments from Partner Exchanges to take additional steps to promote ESG performance.

2012 Global Dialogue

The SSE 2012 was also part of the Forum’s Economics & Finance of Sustainable Development track. Sessions in this track explored how sustainable finance and responsible investment can contribute to a more efficient allocation of capital towards sustainable development and better achieve longer-term investment goals. The SSE 2012 contributed to the Forum’s objective of bringing greater scale and quality to sustainability practices.

2010 Global Dialogue

The Sustainable Stock Exchanges 2010 Global Dialogue took place against the backdrop of UNCTAD’s World Investment Forum and the China International Fair for Investment and Trade (CIFIT) which brought together 1500 leaders from various stakeholder groups including governments, businesses, international organizations, investment promotion agencies, civil society, and international investment experts and practitioners from across the world.
